By Angela Rodriguez Prilliman. I had minutes to make my decision. I was choosing either a Mexican last name or a white last name. I had gotten so swept up in my wedding-planning process that I completely forgot that I would have to ultimately make the decision to remain a Rodriguez or become a Prilliman. But as I was filling out the marriage-license paperwork, reality sunk in. If I went through with this name change, I would no longer have a Hispanic label attached to me.
I wish I could say it went differently, but there seemed to be more cons than pros that came with my Hispanic last name due to the racism my family and I have experienced for most of our lives. I grew up in a small, predominantly white, rural town in central Texas that was known for rodeo, high school football and farms that smell like mounds of cow patties. When I was little, my dad worked on one of these farms. Originally from Monterrey, Mexico, he came to the United States chasing the American dream like many others.
After getting married, my mom and dad moved to Stephenville specifically for a farming job opportunity. Given that I was only four or five at the time, I never thought twice about my dad working on a farm because it was all I ever knew.

My cousins can be split into two groups: Ones who grew up with weaves and skin lighteners and ones who needed sunscreen and haircuts. Our family is a classic case of women and the black men who left them versus the white men who stayed. I remember being 6 and slapping my white uncle in the face to figure out why his face turned bloodred. I wondered how men with such delicate bodies seemed to be the only ones who could endure the storm.

Afro-Mexicans Spanish : afromexicanos; negros; afrodescendientes , also known as Black Mexicans , are Mexicans who have a predominant heritage from Sub-Saharan Africa and identify as such. Afro-Mexicans are most concentrated in specific, largely isolated communities, including the populations of the Costa Chica of Oaxaca and Guerrero , Veracruz and in some cities in northern Mexico. As opposed to other Spanish-speaking countries in Latin America with visible Afro-Latino populations, the history of Africans in Mexico has been lesser known for a number of reasons.
Included among these reasons were their small numbers as a proportion of the overall population of Mexico, irregular intermarriage with other Mexican ethnic groups, racism in Mexico and other Latin-American countries, and Mexico’s tradition of defining itself as a ” Mestizo ” country. A large percentage of indigenous Mexicans reside in Mexico.
In other cases, Spanish colonists raped the female slaves. Spanish colonists created an elaborate racial caste system, classifying people by racial mixture. This system broke down in the very late colonial period; after Independence, the legal notion of race was eliminated. The creation of a national Mexican identity, especially after the Mexican Revolution , emphasized Mexico’s indigenous Amerindians and Spanish European heritage, excluding Africans’ history and contributions from Mexico’s national consciousness.

When I pick my son up at the library, he is standing in front of a blonde girl. As I move closer, I hear them talking, laughing, flirting in that awkward early-teen way. She clearly likes my son, and I can see him basking in the attention. I admit to some motherly pride that someone besides his grandmothers and me recognizes his attractiveness. But, at the same time, I start to watch the door. My son is not white. I remember a time when I easily fell for the story that Latino men liked big women.
For a fat girl like me, it was a comforting story. But as other white women shared these stories with me, I started to get itchy. There was something to the narrative that kept bothering me. Yes, my partner has a leaning towards fat girls like me, but to suggest that everyone in an entire ethnic group has the same preference, I realize now, is clearly wrong. When my son underwent his teenage sexual awakening, I started to pay even more attention to these stories from my past. After all, these women were talking about men like my son.
